Introduction to the DTS System
The DTS (Diathermic Syncope®) System is an Australian-developed technology designed specifically for bovines to enhance animal welfare at slaughter. Developed over more than 20 years of research in the meat processing industry, DTS replaces traditional stunning methods with a controlled electromagnetic process that induces 100% reversible rapid insensibility.
This system is engineered to operate at chain speeds suitable for both small and large-scale processing facilities and meets the requirements of both religious and conventional slaughter practices, including Kosher and Halal.

How It Works
The DTS System connects a generator to a specialized applicator. When positioned on the animal’s forehead, the applicator delivers a controlled burst of energy for approximately 8 seconds, as specified by the manufacturer. The control panel regulates the energy level to manage reversibility. Correct settings, validated by research, ensure the animal can return to consciousness if desired.
The process elevates the animal’s brain temperature by around 7°C, inducing syncope (fainting) within 3 seconds. The animal remains insensible for 3–4 minutes. Extensive trials, supported by EEG recordings, confirm the onset of a high-amplitude, low-frequency epileptiform state during this period.
Animal Welfare and Safety
During application, a restraining device holds the animal securely, ensuring safety and precision. Once insensibility is confirmed—indicated by the absence of corneal reflexes—the device repositions the animal for slaughter. No immobiliser is required; the cut alone results in rapid exsanguination, with strong blood flow and observable breathing and heart function until blood loss is complete.
As the brain temperature returns to normal, consciousness would naturally be restored if slaughter had not occurred.
