Introduction to the DTS System

DTS: Diathermic Syncope ® is a novel, new technology that has been developed in Australia for bovines to improve animal welfare at slaughter. Fit for purpose to be effective and humane to meet both religious and animal welfare requirements.

It has been researched for over 12 years across the meat processing industry. It utilises a dielectric (microwave) system in place of existing stunning methods that have traditionally been used for cattle.

It effectively leads to 100% reversible rapid insensibility.

The animal can be humanely slaughtered without requiring the current stunning processes.
The DTS system has been developed to be compatible with chain speed of small and large processing facilities.

The DTS system has an innovative connection from its generator to an Applicator.  The DTS Applicator is placed on the animal’s forehead and according to manufacturer’s specifications, energy is applied for 8 seconds.

The DTS control panel is set to determine the level of energy transferred from the generator to the applicator to control reversibility.

Research has shown with the correct setting the animal can return to consciousness.

The process increases the brain temperature by 7 degrees Celsius which causes syncope / fainting through a single application.

The animal then becomes insensible after 3 seconds for a period of 3 to 4 minutes.

This has been set out and designed specifically to operate in this matter and confirmed by extensive trials and research using EEG data confirming the development of a high – amplitude-low frequency epileptiform state in the animal.

“DTS utilises a dielectric (microwave) system which effectively leads to 100% reversible rapid insensibility.”

EEG recordings are measured and recorded to show EEG and epileptiform activity.

The animal is rendered insensible displaying no corneal reflexes.

A restraining device is used for application to the animal, which reinforces a safe and humane process. After insensibility is confirmed the restraining device rotates and positions the animal for slaughter. After which there is no need to use an immobiliser as the animal bleeds rapidly to death using the cut alone.

Blood flow on exsanguination is strong and rapid.

Normal heavy breathing and heart function can be observed until the completion of blood loss.

The animal that has been rendered insensible by the DTS process, would return to consciousness, as the brain temperature returns to normal.

This technology is suitable for both the Kosher and Halal markets.

After the animal is released from the restraint there is no need for a ventral cut, thoracic stick or use of an immobiliser.
